Regardless of whether you are a fresh faced Cat 6er, or rocking some fierce day drag like Catherine Baba during Paris Fashion Week, you've probably experimented with wearing some type of makeup while cycling. When make up fails you on your bike, the results are a disaster. From sunscreen running into your eyes, to getting caught in the rain with non waterproof mascara, cycling puts some additional challenges in anyone beauty routine. The following are PDF’s absolute fail proof products. Add a few to and help your current routine to HTFU.
So this is the original and best of the tubing technology mascaras. Waterproof mascaras sort of work, but they can be hard to remove completely and tend to get super smudgy in the presence of sunscreen. Blinc works by sealing each lash in a tiny, smudge proof, flake proof tube. It wont budge at all, no matter how hard you're hammering, and will come off instantly with warm water. It is a race safe product, that looks just as great for a night out. It comes off instantly, in one spidery little bunch, the second you hop in the shower. Its like magic, and you probably need it.
Favorites of NYC makeup artists, these two eyeliners are the gold standard. They both deposit a ton of super rich pigment, and no matter what you're doing, they don't move, and have remarkable staying power throughout the day. A dramatic cat eye lid is pretty fool proof for cycling, and is definitely favored by PDF. The Aqua Liner works great for this look, and has a great matte finish.
If you've abandoned all makeup while cycling, Revlon’s Just Bitten lip stains invite you back. They come in so many colors, its possible that here at PDF we may have matched shades to our bike frames. Anyway, they are super inexpensive and incredibly durable. More than strong enough to cover you commute to lunch time. We don't recommend them for longer rides, as they might not stand up to gel after gel. But yeah, you can wear bright red lipstick on your next local ride.
Undoubtedly the greatest sunscreen for active women who wear makeup. There are plenty of super water proof sunscreens, but very few you could comfortably wear under a full face of makeup. Anthelios has a super light consistency, that goes on super easily and sinks right in. It dries to a flawless, matte finish instantly. It is highly water resistant, and suitable for racing and long distance rides. And it is completely undetectable when added to a standard beauty routine.
For most of us cycling eliminated the need for any time of blush whatsoever. The same goes for bronzer as well. Rosey cheeks and tawny skin are as inevitable as funny tan lines and big old smiles you get from cycling. But should you want a product to bring out a super glow, this is a top notch product that is a brilliant combination of color pigment and sunscreen with a delicate shimmer. And if you’ve noticed one running theme here, its that you can never ever have enough sunscreen.
A favorite of female surfers, we had to give this product a try. It comes in two shades, for fair to medium skin tones. While that is nothing compared to a beauty counter, this product is a godsend. It can be used in place of a traditional zinc suncreen and foundation/concealer. It blends in to many skin shades, is highly water resistant, and has great coverage. You can sweat and it will stay in place and not run. It isn't super sticky, so it doesn't stand up well to constantly rubbing your face or clearing your nose. That said its finish is so beautiful, its a perfect foundation to wear to work.
At PDF we keep this in our saddle bags, in our purses, and in the change dish next to the front door. You can never have enough of these sticks. They work great as a softening lip balm, you can easily use them on a long ride, over your salty sweaty skin, and they magically do not melt in your jersey pocket. In a pinch, you can use this as an all over sunscreen. It is super race proof and is guaranteed to get good use no matter what type of riding you're doing.
This product is so ubiquitous we’d be surprised if it wasn't already in your medicine cabinet. And while its great at getting off stubborn makeup, and goopy sunscreens, it has another higher calling. It is the absolute best at getting bike grease off your skin. Chain ring tattoos don't stand a chance.
So it might be a bit of a stretch calling this towel a beauty product. But its sort of a beauty product for your bike and you at the same time. These were handed out at the Rapha CycloFemme ride and they did a brilliant job of getting the grit and mud off our bodies. No wonder they’re so popular with cyclocross folks! Once you've cleaned yourself up, you can switch sides and use the rougher texture on your bike. But seriously, they are great to throw into the bottom of your bag, so you can still arrive at work looking neat, even if you've dropped your chain.
