1.  I got into cycling because...

...I was too impatient to wait for trains and buses when living in Chicago. One winter, I decided I’d rather ride my bike through the snow than have to wait on a freezing cold platform for the next train. Riding my bike for transportation gave me a sense of freedom to do what I wanted to do when I felt like doing it! That sense of freedom and adventure drew me into the cycling world. Slowly but surely, I found myself tackling my first century on the road, finishing my first cyclocross race and experiencing how it feels to shred down a mountain for the first time.

2. Whats the best part about riding with Jonathan?

Every ride is an adventure for Jonathan. When I ride with him, I get to revisit that sense of adventure that initially drew me to cycling. I never have to ask if we can take the road that looks fantastic but have no clue where it goes because he’s already turning onto it. From the beginning of our friendship, we’ve always worked as a team on and off the bike. Whenever I’m having trouble with a technical decent or bonking up a steep climb, he’s always there cheering me on. He tends to seek the same thrills and challenges that I look for on a bike and constantly inspires me to try new things. I feel we both share that visceral and almost spiritual connection to cycling, so riding together brings us that much closer.

3. What have you learned from riding with Jonathan?

I have to credit Jonathan for teaching me close to everything (but not EVERYTHING) I know about cycling. From riding etiquette and technique to the “rules” and how to break them, he’s always been my sensi.

4. Favorite cycling destination?

Midwestern gravel roads are maybe my nostalgic favorite. Everyone thinks Nebraska is flat and boring, but I promise you that they are dead wrong. Now that I’m living in Texas, Hill Country provides fantastic roads and trails that I’m still getting to know. This summer I’ll be riding some of the Pacific Northwest for the first time and look forward to reporting back on how that goes.

5. When we aren't cycling together we are...

Trying to make time for each other outside of our jobs and my graduate studies. Our mornings are often spent riding our tandem out to the lake and making coffee at sunrise on a fairly regular basis. Our morning coffee ritual together is something I cherish. Evenings watching Dr. Who and snuggling with our two cats is probably a close second. We also love hosting our truly wonderful friends for dinner, board games and bourbon.

6. Favorite local bike shop?

Mellow Johnny’s in Austin. They have showers and a coffee shop. Not to mention, this one stud of a mechanic works there and he always takes the best care of my bikes in exchange for a few kisses and homemade cookies. Monkey Wrench in Nebraska will always be a favorite of mine. They have a bicycle museum worth making a trip to see as well as some of the best dudes

7. When there is a sale at ____ I buy everything

JCrew...I’m such a sucker for the men’s XS clearance rack.

8. My ultimate goal is to...

Love others unconditionally.

Be humble and happy.

Always be willing to learn and incorporate new ways of seeing, being and learning.

1.  I got into cycling because...

My car was kept breaking down! I was a young student, and I had just been given an old cruiser from my grandfather as a moving away from home present. I discovered that I could ride to work and school in just about the same time as my drive had taken, and I found myself riding this clunky bike on longer jaunts outside of town. I became aware pretty quickly that I was in love with just about every aspect of the sport of cycling, from utility cycling to racing. I also lost about 45 pounds after my first year of riding.

 2. Whats the best part about riding with Jolene?

Jolene is always eager to explore, she's steady and dependable, and she makes me laugh at the most terrible times (usually halfway up a climb or while I'm eating an energy bar). It has never taken much to talk her into crazy stuff, like riding a gravel and dirt road century with me at five in the morning on a Wednesday. She's equally willing to get dressed up real fancy-like and ride bikes to the symphony or the ballet together. That flexibility and willingness has always been one of my favorite things about her, and it makes riding together a simple joy.

 3. What have you learned from riding with Jolene?

She's actually taught me how to be more competitive. When I jumped into my first few races, my primary motivators were curiosity and mild boredom. When things would get really tough, I'd lose interest and disengage because I wasn't having fun. Watching her react to similar situations and stick it out, sometimes even pulling off huge victories, has helped me find a healthy competitive edge in myself that I did not know before.

 4. Favorite cycling destination?

Colorado, so far. We had the good fortune to be able to spend a few days shredding up some really technical trails around Copper Mountain a few years ago on borrowed S-Works bikes. It was more than either of us were used to at the time, but somehow we made it back down the mountain time and again (in one piece, no less!) and made some memories I'll hold onto for the rest of my life.

5. When we aren't cycling together we are...

Cooking, listening to records, and trying to stay connected despite our schedules not overlapping very well. I get a lot of joy from just catching the sunrise with her on days that we don't have much time for each other.

6. Favorite local bike shop?

Monkey Wrench Cycles in Lincoln, Nebraska. Those boys know everything there is to know about dirt road riding and the shop doubles as a museum of vintage and totally sweet MTBs. When the staff at MWC dream at night it's like Freewheelin' on a nonstop loop, and visions of Charlie Kelly and Fred Wolf dancing like nobody's watching.

Local to me now, Mellow Johnny's in Austin. I'm biased because I work there, but I love it. Relationships, community and keeping things fun are the main things going on at MJ's. Everybody who works there is riding constantly and devotes a good chunk of their time to the sport.

7. When there is a sale at _____ I buy everything

Rapha. Man, oh man. This last winter sale almost broke me.

 8. My ultimate goal is to...

Be honest, be surrounded by good people, and never be too far from my next cup of coffee.
