Mae

I got into cycling because...

After moving to Atlanta I wanted a bike to ride around town, but was overwhelmed with the choices and my lack of knowledge. When Zach and I started dating he was a fixie kid, so he was able to steer me in the right direction to get my very first single speed. Then a road bike...then a CX bike.

Whats the best part about riding with Zach?

He wants to see me succeed, so he's always trying to help. I really enjoy his company and although I can't stand when he talks my ear off when I'm suffering - deep down I appreciate his good intentions and I'm always glad he shares his post ride Coke with me.

What have you learned from riding with Zach?

Besides the general beginner knowledge, three things stand out to me: 1. It's really fucking hard to put on a good alley cat race. This is something we did together the first year of dating 2. If you can't be fast, look fast. I now understand proper sock length, how a kit should fit, etc. 3. Train even when you don't feel like it. He NEVER misses a training ride unless he's sick, I really admire that.

 Favorite cycling destination?

Climbing is something I struggle with so I enjoy the practice I get when we go to Three Gaps in North Georgia. We try and frequent that route as much as we can. It's a good mix of climbing, fun decents, the perfect amount of stops for extra food/water and beautiful scenery. Plus, you can go swimming in the river after your ride.

When we aren't cycling together we are...

Most likely stuffing our faces with Sushi or Mexican food, working, or traveling to a race. I can honestly say, we don't have much of a life outside of work and cycling.

Favorite local bike shop?

Loose Nuts Cycles in Atlanta and Cycle Sport in Athens. Both shops have really gone the extra mile to help me out.

When there is a sale at _____ I buy everything.

Topshop! I would include Lululemon, but I can't ever seem to get my hands on anything in black before it's sold out.

My ultimate goal is to...

Inspire other people to ride, especially women. I also definitely wouldn't mind getting a bit faster.

I got into cycling because...

Cycling, for me, started as a way to do hood-rat stuff with my friends in the big city. A couple of my close friends had track bikes they rode around and it got me interested. I bought my first fixie from my friend John at his shop, he hooked me up with a really good deal and little did I know it was just the start of a bad habit of buying bikes. My friend Patrick, has an obsession with NJS (certified track racing equipment from Japan) which led us to have many late night conversations about track bike parts and different opinions on what we like about track bikes. We watched alleycat videos like “Line of Sight” and others about a million times and then went out and rode our bikes around Atlanta like we were being filmed for a video. We weren’t… But we were having a good time pretending. We all got together and raced alleycats and alleycross races and had a blast doing those. Then, things got serious in fall 2013 when I heard that #crossiscoming. I bought a cross bike and decided to go racing. Things spiraled out of control after that first cross season. I started racing road the following spring of 2014. I’ve just received my cat 2 upgrade in road and cross, so I guess you can say that once I got started cycling and taking it serious, I really went off the deep end.

Whats the best part about riding with Mae?

The absolute best part about riding with Mae is watching her progress as a cyclist. She has made so much progress since she started riding, on and off the bike. She’s gotten leaps and bounds faster, kicked ass at races, climbed to the toughest mountains, constantly surprising me with how hard she can push herself and how deep she can dive into the pain cave. Her progress as a social media giant via cycling is incredible as well, she gives so many people inspiration to ride and be active.

What have you learned from riding with Mae?

Patience. I am very vocal on the bike and tend to talk a lot when I’m riding. Mae is the exact opposite and likes to suffer in silence. Riding with Mae has taught me to bite my tongue, hold back any advice or thoughts and save them for when the pain has stopped and we’re on our way to get frozen yogurt together.

Favorite cycling destination?

The mountains. There is no better way to spend a day than by heading up to Dahlonega, Georgia to ride up and down the sides of mountains.

When we aren't cycling together we are ...

Relaxing. We both train, race and work so much that on the off-chance that we do get down-time we tend to spend it take it easy, going out to eat and watching our favorite shows on Netflix.

Favorite local bike shop?

Apalachee Cycles - It’s my local shop. I ride the group ride there almost every Tuesday and Thursday evening. There is beer on tap for when those rides just get you really dehydrated. It’s a great shop, a great ride and full of good people.

When there is a sale at ____ I buy everything

The comic book shop. I like comic books.

My ultimate goal is to...

My ultimate cycling goal is to race in the USA Cyclocross Nationals within the next 5 years. I’ve already made so much progress in my racing career, I’m keeping my goals high and aiming for the top.
